Our story

Founded in 2020 (yep, right in the middle of the pandemic) by Gillian Kilgour and Vincent Bonaddio, King St Metalsmiths is a creative jewellery workshop and retail space in King St Newtown. Gilli and Vince are dedicated artisans with over 60 years' combined experience working in fine jewellery design and manufacturing. They bring a fresh, unique perspective - and a substantial collection of hammers - to the vibrant and creative community of the Inner West.

Together Gilli and Vince have built King St Metalsmiths to be a creative space where people come to share their ideas, discover unique designs and have access to craftspeople who work closely with their clients to create pieces that will become heirlooms for many lifetimes. The commission pieces are directed by the customer, and each creation tells a tale. They use traditional handmade techniques, as well as new technologies such as 3D modelling, printing and laser welding. They elevate the materials they work with to be symbols of individuality, whilst honouring the history of the craft, the metals and gemstones with which they work, and the stories of the people they create these pieces for.

About Gillian Kilgour
Gilli has a background in Fine Arts, graduating from the College of Fine Arts (UNSW) in 1998, while also undertaking a traditional jewellery apprenticeship with Tarasin Jewellers. She has been dedicated to her craft ever since, working with numerous jewellery workshops in Newcastle and Sydney - and is a qualified teacher.

She believes that jewellery is more than just adornment or a show of wealth - it is wearable art and a powerful method of self expression. Her ranges are inspired by symbolism, poetry and music, exploring themes of love and loss, and connection between the generations, underscored with a healthy dose of humour and irreverence.

Gilli loves making lists, Chicken Crimpys, and always has too many tabs open.

About Vincent Bonaddio
Vince Bonaddio has been working in the jewellery trade since the age of 18, securing a coveted apprenticeship with jewellery royalty, Robert Clerc. This gave him exposure to the highest level of craftsmanship, design and materials that any apprentice could hope for.

He spent 22 years working for Robert and Michelle, creating pieces for rockstars and royalty (seriously). Vince is one of the best artisans in the country, with incredible attention to detail and dedication to the perfection of his craft.

He must have coffee at 3pm everyday, and God help you if you borrow his tools and don’t put them back in exactly the same spot.
